Senior Portrait Session on a Seattle City Rooftop

Updated: Jul 14

When Asher and his mom reached out to me for his senior photos I instantly pictured him in a city background. When I mentioned a parking garage in Seattle they were totally psyched about it which just added fuel to the fire!

The light at this location is ideal for evening sessions right at golden hour. You get perfect direct light and many shady spots as well! The structure has a big urban feel to it, with concrete beams, parking paint, and of course the gorgeous towering buildings in the background.

It's always important for the client to feel like the location is authentic to who they are. Based on what I know about Asher, he wouldn't have been as comfortable in a field of wheat. Regardless of how beautiful the location was, the photos wouldn't have been half as good due to the uncomfortable disconnect Asher would have had with the environment. It was so rewarding to see how much of his personality and love for this city shone during his session.

One of the biggest reasons for my choosing this parking garage as a go to location is the privacy. Not all clients are going to be comfortable getting their photos taken infront of strangers in a public place. Here, we really get to have fun with the poses and prompts without the client feeling self-conscious. One of the main goals for me is to deliver images that my client sees their true self in. Privacy is a big stepping stone to that final goal.

The accessibility is another pro to this location! You can park right on the top floor of this garage for $15 per hour and have direct access to your props and outfits. You can also find free street parking down below and ride the elevator up to the 10th floor, Whichever is most convenient for you!

Asher and I discussed my outfit guide and he brought along three outfits, however we only shot one since he changed his mind about the other two. That's the thing, you don't have to commit to the outfits or props you bring along with you. it's just comforting to know you have other options in case you don't feel your best in your first pick. Asher followed his gut and stuck the the first one, he felt effortless and most like himself in it and that's what matters!

I had a blast at this session, Asher had an amazing sense of humor and didn't take himself too seriously during the shoot. If you take anything away from this post, have it be authenticity! no matter who you've chosen as your photographer, I guarantee they just want you to be you.
